Luxembourg, 02 July 2026
The Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) in Luxembourg will on Thursday rule on an appeal by Google and Alphabet against a competition fine in the billions imposed by the EU in connection with the Android smartphone operating system.
What is the Android case about?
The case revolves around a record fine that the European Commission imposed on Google in 2018. The background was the accusation that the group had imposed illegal restrictions on manufacturers of Android smartphones and mobile network operators in order to strengthen the market dominance of its search engine. The European Commission, which is responsible for enforcing competition rules in the EU, saw this as an abuse of a dominant market position.
