The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) has formally filed a complaint with the World Cup organizers and world governing body FIFA following massive nighttime noise disturbances by Mexican fans outside the team hotel in the Santa Fe district, just hours before Ecuador's round-of-16 match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
As the federation announced on Tuesday, motorcyclists and celebrating supporters had gathered outside the Ecuadorian team's hotel on the night before the matchday. They revved engines, honked horns, played loud music, and set off fireworks. The FEF described the behavior as being far removed "from the principles of fair play, fairness, and unity that a World Cup should stand for."
According to the Mexican media outlets "El Financiero" and "Récord," calls had previously circulated on social networks to gather with loudspeakers, drums, trumpets, horns, and other noise-making instruments outside the hotel. Videos circulating online showed fans attempting to disrupt the Ecuadorian players' sleep with deafening noise.
