Ahead of the World Cup Round of 16 match between host nation Mexico and Ecuador, hundreds of people stormed a fan fest in the northern city of Monterrey after the access points had been closed due to overcrowding.

Overcrowding triggers riots

After the Parque Fundidora grounds had reached the maximum capacity of approximately 100,000 people, the access points were closed, the newspaper "El Norte" reported. Afterwards, fans attempted to break down gates, climb over fences, or tear them down, according to media reports from Tuesday (local time). In downtown Mexico City, fans also reportedly attempted to storm a fan fest.

Police used pepper spray during the incident in Monterrey, according to reports. The broadcaster Telediario reported that several people were injured in the scuffle. In the city of Guadalajara, several fans were detained after clashes at the fan fest, according to the broadcaster "Milenio."
