A panel of renowned education researchers has called for social media to be banned in German primary schools, citing significant risks including addiction and cyberbullying that already affect young children.
The Aktionsrat Bildung (Education Action Council), a body of leading education scientists, released a report on Monday recommending the exclusion of social media from primary school settings. The group argues that the dangers and undesirable side effects of platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and social gaming services outweigh any possible positive aspects for children of primary school age.
Nele McElvany, an education scientist at the University of Dortmund and a member of the council, told the German Press Agency (dpa) that the risks are too great to ignore. "Die Gefahren und unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen von Social Media überlagern nach unserer Einschätzung mögliche positive Aspekte im Grundschulalter," she said, meaning the dangers and undesirable side effects of social media outweigh possible positive aspects for this age group.
