The German Ethics Council has spoken out against a blanket legal minimum age for the use of social media and instead presented a differentiated protection concept for children and young people in the digital world.

The body published its position in the statement "Protection, Participation and Empowerment of Children and Young People in the Digital World." Chairman Helmut Frister explained the thrust: "Die Einführung eines gesetzlichen Mindestalters für soziale Medien ist dafür aus Sicht des Deutschen Ethikrates nicht geeignet." The Council thus aligns itself with the position of other experts who likewise reject a general ban.
