Dallas, July 4, 2026
Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas and reached the Round of 16 of a World Cup for the first time in 92 years.
Match proceedings and penalty shootout
The match in front of 70,244 spectators at the Dallas Stadium ended 1:1 (1:0) after 120 minutes. Following goals by Emam Ashour (13th minute) for Egypt and an own goal by Mohamed Hany (55th) for Australia, the penalty shootout had to decide. There, the "Pharaohs" kept their nerve and converted all four attempts, while Australia missed two penalties through Souttar and the 18-year-old Lucas Herrington.
Egypt was the dominant team for long stretches and controlled proceedings after taking the lead with 66 percent possession. Australia had initially dropped deep into its own half in the first half and lurked for counterattacks, which rarely led to genuine scoring chances. The first big chance belonged to the "Socceroos": Cristian Volpato hit the crossbar in the 5th minute with a turning shot from around 25 meters.
Emam Ashour gave the seven-time Africa Cup of Nations winner an early lead. The attacking player headed from short range after the Australian defense had given him too much space following a cross. It was Ashour's second tournament goal at this finals. Egypt had had to worry before the match whether superstar Mohamed Salah would be fit in time – the captain had picked up a thigh strain in the group match against Iran (1:1) and had been substituted off.
