Eight dead in drone attack on Russian holiday camp – Moscow reports mass interception of 328 drones

In parallel, the Russian side reported attacks on industrial targets. The governor of the Tyumen region, Alexander Moor, said a Ukrainian drone had fallen "on the territory" of an oil refinery and triggered a fire. The facility was an important part of the regional energy supply. Fire crews brought the blaze under control according to Moor, though the exact scale of damage had not yet been quantified.

Governor reports hit on oil refinery

Moscow said Ukraine had attacked overnight with more than 300 drones. The wave had stretched over several hours and hit targets in at least eight Russian federal subjects. Russian authorities spoke of an unprecedented scale and accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilian objects.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it had been a "double" drone attack. According to him, the attacked plant "makes parts for the weapons with which Russia attacks our people." The Ukrainian side rejected accusations of having attacked civilian targets and spoke of retaliation for Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Kyiv speaks of retaliation

The attack on the holiday resort was the most consequential known Ukrainian drone strike on Russian state territory since the start of the Russian offensive in February 2022. According to Russian authorities, at least 19 people in total were killed in Ukrainian and Russian attacks on Saturday. The figures could not initially be independently verified.

In Ukraine's Sumy region, four people were killed by Russian shelling according to Ukrainian authorities. In Zaporizhzhia, a 63-year-old man died from Russian shelling according to the Ukrainian side. The Ukrainian Air Force said it had intercepted several drones and missiles overnight.

Casualties also in Ukraine

In the Donetsk region, six people were killed and 30 others injured, including a child, over the past 24 hours according to Ukrainian figures. In total, 72 civilian buildings, including 42 residential houses, were damaged or completely destroyed within a day. The Ukrainian government spoke of a targeted wave of attacks on residential areas.

In a missile strike on the Kyiv region, ten people were killed and nearly 100 others injured at midday according to Ukrainian figures. Rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors. Several apartment blocks and public facilities were severely damaged according to the city administration.

Russia has been conducting a large-scale offensive in Ukraine since February 2022. The mutual drone and missile attacks have greatly expanded since then. Both sides now make large-scale use of inexpensive drones, which are also deployed for strikes deep in the opponent's rear.

Already in July 2026, Ukraine said it had targeted a warehouse belonging to Russia's largest online retailer "Wildberries" near Saint Petersburg. Ukraine said such targets served the logistics of the Russian armed forces and were therefore legitimate military objectives. Russia rejected this characterization and spoke of attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Drone shot down over Romania

NATO territory was also affected overnight according to Romanian authorities. As Romanian officials stated, an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force shot down a new drone in Romanian airspace. The interception took place near the village of Padina, roughly 100 kilometers from the capital Bucharest. Border strips had been mined and roads along the more than 1,000-kilometer border secured with anti-drone nets.

EU foreign policy meanwhile dealt with the consequences of the conflict. Austria's Europe Minister Claudia Bauer spoke out against a "turbo accession" of Ukraine to the European Union. "A turbo accession upon request, that simply isn't possible," the ÖVP politician told the newspaper "Die Welt." The accession of a country with 39 million people and a very different agricultural structure would significantly change the EU and must be carefully weighed.

Austria blocks fast EU accession

Bauer also warned against a "two-tier society" in the EU. All accessions had to follow the same rules, and every country wishing to become a new EU member had to "earn its accession through merit." The Ukrainian government had repeatedly demanded an accelerated accession process in recent weeks.

The economic consequences of the conflict are also being felt in energy policy. Russia is extending the ban on gasoline exports until the end of the year, as Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told the state Russian news agency Interfax. Diesel exports are to be permitted again "as soon as the market recovers." International energy experts interpreted the move as an attempt to stabilize the domestic market.

Zelensky announced meanwhile in an interview with X blogger Laura Loomer: "We will build a large factory in the USA." Details on the planned location and production were not initially given. The statement came as part of a broader Ukrainian campaign to attract Western arms investments.

In view of the ongoing attacks, the Ukrainian government called on the population in the affected regions to be especially vigilant. Air raid sirens wailed in several regions, including Kyiv and Kharkiv. International aid organizations provided emergency shelters and medical assistance for the injured.
