Eight injured after bus accident involving Austrian students on Dutch A28

The injured were taken to surrounding hospitals, including the Isala Clinic in Zwolle as well as facilities in Hardenberg and Meppel. According to the police, none of the injured persons is in life-threatening condition. The authorities initially provided no detailed information regarding the exact nature of the injuries — whether they are minor, moderate, or severe.

Closure and traffic situation

The A28 motorway was temporarily fully closed in both directions. Traffic backed up for several kilometers, as reported by the Dutch traffic service ANWB. The alternate routes through the town of Wezep were also temporarily overloaded. Not until late in the morning could the lane in the direction of Zwolle be reopened.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry in Vienna confirmed that it is in close coordination with the Dutch authorities and is organizing support for those affected and their families. A special unit for disaster relief and crisis management has been activated to coordinate the return journey of the uninjured students as well as contacting their relatives.

Investigation into the cause

The police in Zwolle have called in a traffic investigation service to determine the cause of the accident. According to a spokesperson, the investigators are looking into, among other things, a possible tire blowout, a medical emergency of the driver, and the question of whether the weather — at the time of the accident there was light rain — played a role. Experts secured traces at the wrecked vehicle.

According to the authorities, the bus was registered with an Austrian company. How the vehicle was being used in the Netherlands and whether it had been arranged through a tour operator is part of the ongoing investigation. The company itself did not initially comment publicly on the incident.

Reactions from Austria

Parents and relatives were informed through the schools as well as a specially set up hotline. Information events were held on Monday at several school locations in the greater Schönberg area, attended by representatives of the school authority, psychologists, and the responsible mayor.

The Dutch public prosecution office is reviewing whether to initiate a criminal investigation. This will depend on the results of the technical examination of the bus as well as interviews with the injured and witnesses. A spokesperson for the Zwolle public prosecution office spoke of a "serious traffic accident with personal injury."

In recent years, there have repeatedly been serious bus accidents in the Netherlands involving school and travel groups. Traffic experts point out that coaches from abroad are sometimes operated under increased strain and with long driving times. Calls for stricter EU-wide controls for cross-border bus tours have been under discussion for years.
