Eight People Rescued in Boat Accident on the Danube Near Ybbs-Persenbeug

The remaining members of the travel group were brought to safety with the assistance of fire department boats. A storm and rain moved in and are believed to have caught the approximately 60-person travel group on the Danube by surprise.

Rescue Operation Involving Multiple Organizations

The Arbeiter-Samariterbund (Workers' Samaritan Federation), the water rescue service, and the police were also deployed. The Red Cross provided the rescued individuals with blankets. According to Gutlederer, all of those affected suffered mild hypothermia.

There were no injuries. Several people were rescued from the Danube near the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant on Wednesday afternoon. Eight people were affected, including two children.

Philipp Gutlederer, spokesperson for Notruf Niederösterreich, confirmed the incident on Wednesday afternoon. The coordination of the rescue measures was handled by the Lower Austria state emergency operations center, with the fire department and the water rescue service working hand in hand.

Sudden Weather Change as Likely Cause

Viadonau, the Austrian waterway company, provided a working boat for the rescue of the capsized individuals. This made it possible to quickly bring those affected out of the current area near the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant, where the flow can be particularly treacherous.

After the rescue, the eight affected individuals received medical care from the Red Cross and the Arbeiter-Samariterbund. Due to the mild hypothermia, blankets and warm beverages were distributed before the travel group was able to begin their journey home.

Consequences and Further Investigations

Police and water rescue personnel subsequently secured the scene of the accident and inspected the other boats belonging to the travel group. According to the current state of affairs, all participants of the group escaped with nothing more than a fright; authorities assume a combination of a sudden weather change and boat traffic on the Danube was to blame.

The Danube is considered a challenging section of water along the stretch near the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant. Even experienced paddlers can quickly run into difficulties during a sudden change in weather, as occurred on Wednesday.
