During a targeted foreign-police inspection at the Bruck an der Leitha traffic checkpoint on the Eastern Motorway (A4), officers rescued on Thursday evening eight puppies, only around five weeks old, from a Romanian box van, where they had been transported without water, food, or climate control.

Targeted operation on the Eastern Motorway

The discovery occurred on July 23, 2026, at around 5:45 p.m. as part of a targeted operation conducted under the direction of the Foreigners and Border Police Department of the Lower Austria State Police Directorate. As police announced the following day, the inspecting officers came across eight puppies in the cargo area of the Romanian box van inside a completely unsecured transport box. According to the investigation, the animals had already been on the road for more than seven hours and around 540 kilometers without water, food, and without adequate climate control of the cargo area.
