In the night leading into Saturday, two donkeys escaped from the Lainzer Tiergarten in Vienna-Hietzing and made their way onto the Westeinfahrt, where police closed one lane and secured the animals with improvised halters.

What happened in the night leading into Saturday?

On the Westeinfahrt in Vienna-Hietzing, two escaped donkeys were wandering on the road. Drivers had alerted police after the animals had strayed onto the roadway. Dangerous scenes involving road users ensued.

Officers from the city police commands of Meidling and Fünfhaus immediately closed the right lane to protect the animals and other road users. The Hofjagdstraße, which in this section belongs to the Westeinfahrt, was thus partially blocked to traffic in the night leading into Saturday.

Police operation: Belts as emergency halters

The officers converted their belts into emergency halters and secured the donkeys. They converted their duty uniform belts into emergency halters, placed them around the animals, and secured the donkeys in this way. With this improvised equipment, the police officers succeeded in bringing the animals under control without injuring them.
