Eight players of the Tunisian national football team have tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol in doping samples taken around the FIFA World Cup, as several media outlets have reported in agreement.
According to the British newspaper "Times" and other international media, eight players of the Tunisian squad tested positive for clenbuterol. The substance is an anabolic steroid that appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list and belongs to the group of performance-enhancing agents. An official statement from the Tunisian federation was not initially available.
The Tunisian team was eliminated from the tournament after the group stage. Nevertheless, the positive findings have attracted international attention because they overshadow the proceedings of a World Cup. Clenbuterol is used in livestock fattening but can also lead to prohibited effects in athletes. While experts point out that the performance-enhancing effect is limited, detection in an athlete's body must be clearly punished under anti-doping rules.
