Eisenstadt, June 12, 2026
The Eisenstadt Public Prosecutor's Office has finally closed the investigation into the death of former Justice Ministry section chief Christian Pilnacek, who drowned in the Danube near Krems in the night of October 20, 2023, because there is no significant change in the evidence situation.
The Eisenstadt Public Prosecutor's Office stated that Pilnacek's death by drowning was "unzweifelhaft festgestellt" (unequivocally established) and that there were "keine Hinweise auf ein Fremdverschulden an den Verletzungen" (no indications of third-party involvement in the injuries). According to the authority, the closure of the investigation had already been reviewed and approved by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office (OStA) Vienna and the Ministry of Justice. "Eine Fortführung des Verfahrens nach dessen Einstellung sei ‚ohne maßgebliche Änderung der Beweislage' in der Strafprozessordnung nicht vorgesehen," it said.
