Vienna, 25 June 2026

The Pilnacek inquiry committee held its final hearing before the summer recess on Wednesday, during which a Vienna forensic pathologist was among those called as a witness; he had prepared a private expert opinion for author Peter Pilz.

The focus of the session was forensic specialist Christian Matzenauer, who had been engaged on behalf of the Krems public prosecutor's office. In the expert opinion he had prepared for Peter Pilz, „konnte in seinem Gutachten keine Anhaltspunkte für die Begehung einer Straftat anführen". Matzenauer had been scheduled to appear as a witness on Thursday and was expected to answer the committee's questions regarding his private expert opinion.

Background: The Pilnacek Affair

The questioning is set against the backdrop of the so-called Pilnacek affair, in which allegations of possible political influence on investigations are being examined. For the Freedom Party (FPÖ), which holds seats on the committee, a central question is at stake: „Konkret wollen die Freiheitlichen wissen, ob diese die Ermittlungsarbeit beeinflusst haben" — referring to former and current interior ministers Wolfgang Sobotka and Gerhard Karner, both of whom belong to the ÖVP.
