Austria's electronic house arrest program, in place for 15 years, offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional imprisonment while reducing recidivism rates.

The program, which uses ankle monitors to track offenders, costs approximately €45 per day, compared to €183 per day for incarceration in prison. Offenders contribute between €8.50 and €22 daily based on their financial situation.

Dina Nachbaur, managing director of the association Neustart, stated that electronic house arrest helps maintain social contacts, employment, and allows for payment of taxes and social insurance. 'Although freedom is restricted, inmates under house arrest do not lose everything that makes up their lives,' she said.

The recidivism rate for electronic house arrest is 10%, compared to 20% for traditional imprisonment. This success is attributed to offenders retaining their jobs, housing, and social environments.
