A suspicion of violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the Federal Nature Conservation Act is being examined.

The Mittelsachsen district office stated in response to an inquiry that searching fields and meadows before mowing is sensible and welcomed, but not explicitly required by animal welfare law. This places the legal assessment of the incident in a gray area, even though the residents' accusation is serious.

Legal Situation and Investigations

Bernd Petasch from the Rehkitzrettung Chemnitz (Chemnitz Fawn Rescue) association explained the particular vulnerability of the young animals. "They stay put until we either rescue them or death comes," Petasch said, referring to the fawns' lack of flight response. In their first weeks of life, dogs cannot sniff them out, they are too well camouflaged for human eyes, and they have not yet developed a flight reflex.

According to Petasch, many agricultural businesses now use technical aids such as thermal imaging cameras and drones to check meadows for hidden fawns before mowing. The Rehkitzrettung Chemnitz association states that it offers such searches for a small reimbursement of expenses, but there are also commercial providers with higher prices.

Work of Fawn Rescuers

In the case of the meadow near Lichtenau, the agricultural company from Claußnitz apparently did not use any of these services and did not have the area searched despite timely warnings from the neighborhood. This makes the incident particularly bitter from the perspective of animal welfare advocates.

The case highlights a growing discussion about the treatment of wild animals in agricultural grassland management. While associations like Rehkitzrettung Chemnitz have been pushing for preventive measures for years, there is still no binding legal regulation that mandates searching meadows before mowing. The district office referred to the principle of voluntariness in this context.

The police investigation and the public prosecutor's assessment are now at the center of attention. If the suspicion of violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the Federal Nature Conservation Act is substantiated, this could have a ripple effect beyond the individual case for other agricultural businesses in the region.

Regardless of the outcome of the proceedings, the incident in Lichtenau has already reignited a debate about greater animal welfare and more binding standards for mowing operations.
