Mukdahan, Thailand, 02 July 2026
An eleven-year-old boy drove a delivery van into a group of Buddhist monks on a pilgrimage in Thailand's northeastern Mukdahan province on 02 July 2026, killing at least eight monks and injuring 18 others, according to police and the Bangkok Post.
The crash occurred along a rural road in Mukdahan Province near the border with Laos. The vehicle struck a procession of 35 monks and five laypeople who were on a walking pilgrimage, according to police statements cited by the Bangkok Post. The group had been traveling between religious sites when the van hit them from the side at the edge of the road.
Provincial police chief Pairoj Thaiphutsa confirmed that the suspect behind the wheel is a child. "Der Verdächtige ist ein Kind," Thaiphutsa said. Police said investigators are preparing to question the boy's parents about the circumstances that allowed the child to take the vehicle.
