Despite qualifying for the round of 16 at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, the England national team under coach Thomas Tuchel has come in for sharp criticism from the domestic press following the 2:1 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The match in Seattle was for long stretches a nerve-wracking affair for the "Three Lions." It was only late that the side coached by Thomas Tuchel managed to finally secure the lead against the DR Congo. The English public made clear after the final whistle that they were unhappy with the performance of the favorites, who are considered strong title contenders.

Criticism of Tuchel's lineup

The "Guardian" analyzed: "England war in diesem Spiel zeitweise wirklich am Ende". The "Daily Star" was even more blunt, accusing Tuchel of a "catastrophic decision" and headlining: "Thomas Tuchels katastrophale Entscheidung wäre beinahe aufgedeckt worden – England entgeht nur knapp einer WM-Überraschung".
