Erste Group Records Significantly Higher Bank Levies in First Half

Hungary Remains Largest Burden

Erste Group is recording a bank levy in Poland for the first time, amounting to 98 million euros. This position is new in the group's lineup and reflects the strategic importance of the Polish market for the banking group. Already last year, Erste Group had announced plans to expand its stake in Erste Bank Polska, which now also carries tax-related consequences.

In total, the three countries mentioned – Hungary, Romania, and Poland – sum to 326 million euros and thus account for the predominant share of overall bank levies of 392 million euros. The remaining roughly 66 million euros are attributable to other group markets, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia.

Bank Levy in Poland Recorded for the First Time

The development is set against the backdrop of a broader trend of rising fiscal burdens for banks in Central and Eastern Europe. Several governments in the region have introduced or increased special levies on the banking sector in recent years in order to support fiscal consolidation. Erste Group, as one of the largest banking groups in the region, is particularly affected by this development.

Despite the rising levies, Erste Group most recently reported a strong operating result. Management categorizes the growing burden from bank levies as a cost factor that reduces operating earnings without fundamentally affecting business development in its core markets.

Strategic Expansion in Poland

The initial recording of the Polish bank levy coincides with Erste Group's expansion of its commitment in Poland. The group had described the entry into Erste Bank Polska as a strategic step aimed at strengthening its market position in one of the largest banking markets in Central and Eastern Europe.

Industry experts point out that bank levies are generally calculated on the basis of balance sheet totals or certain revenue components and are thus closely tied to business performance. A growing volume of business, as Erste Group is targeting in Poland, automatically leads to higher absolute burdens at given levy rates.

Full-Year Outlook

Erste Group will publish its complete half-year results, including a detailed breakdown of regulatory costs, at a later date. Investors and analysts will pay particular attention to the development of the net interest margin and the operating margin in relation to the rising special levies.

With a view to full-year 2026, it remains to be seen to what extent the higher bank levies can be offset by operational gains. Erste Group has emphasized in the past that, despite rising regulatory costs, it intends to stick to its medium-term return target.
