A 39-year-old driver fled a police check in Vienna on Sunday, reached a speed of up to 230 km/h on the Südautobahn (A2), and crashed his vehicle into a fence in Lower Austria.
Start of the pursuit in Vienna-Wieden
The car chase began in the early hours of Sunday morning at around 06:30 in Vienna's Wieden district. Officers from the Kopernikusgasse police station had noticed the car during their patrol in Faulmanngasse and wanted to subject it to a driver and vehicle check, as the Vienna State Police Directorate reported on Monday.
Instead of stopping, the 39-year-old driver – according to the information, a Russian – hit the gas and sped at up to 160 km/h through several streets in the Wieden and Favoriten districts. According to a police spokesperson, the man not only ran red lights and ignored various traffic signs, but also used bus lanes and drove in several sections in lanes in the opposite direction of travel.
