Former world athletics champion Gudaf Tsegay has been suspended for four months and is barred from competing until 30 September, as announced by the independent integrity unit of World Athletics.
According to the information, the 29-year-old tested positive for the substance Letrozole during a training control last December. Tsegay reportedly immediately admitted to using the substance and submitted documents intended to justify its use for medical reasons. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rejected such a step. This has now resulted in the four-month suspension.
Background on the doping case
While the world athletics federation retroactively approved a medical exemption, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) rejected such a step. The discrepancy between the two institutions ultimately led to the sanction. The medication can lower estrogen levels but is primarily used for cancer treatment.
