Catania airport in Sicily has been largely shut down following a new eruption of Mount Etna overnight into Monday, with takeoffs and landings restricted by an ash cloud drifting southward.
Eruption in the early morning
Catania airport on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily remains largely closed following the new eruption of Mount Etna overnight into Monday. According to airport operator SAC, both departures and arrivals are affected by the restrictions. The airport is located in the Sicilian city of Catania and is one of the region's most important transport hubs.
On Sunday morning, activity at Mount Etna intensified at around 8:45 a.m., according to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Ash emissions were released from an opening of the volcano in the early morning. The eruption cloud rose to approximately 1.5 kilometers above the summit and drifted toward the south and south-southeast, according to measurements. "Die Aktivität verstärkte sich und bildete eine Eruptionswolke, die rund 1,5 Kilometer über den Gipfel aufstieg", the INGV said.
