From ash emission to eruption

Following another eruption of Mount Etna overnight into Monday, the airport of the Sicilian city of Catania has been largely closed until further notice because an ash cloud is blocking the airspace over southeastern Sicily.

The roughly 3,350-meter-high Etna is Europe's largest active volcano and is located on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily. It sometimes erupts several times a year and is constantly monitored by experts. Overnight into Monday, its activity intensified once again, this time causing significant disruptions to air traffic at Catania airport.

According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), ash emissions began early in the morning from an opening on Etna. Activity intensified around 8:45 a.m. and produced an eruption cloud that rose approximately 1.5 kilometers above the summit. The eruption cloud drifted south and south-southeast, according to INGV.
