Brussels, 15 July 2026

The ambassadors of the EU member states agreed in principle on Tuesday in Brussels to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainian displaced persons until 4 March 2028, while excluding men of conscription age between 23 and 60 from parts of the facilitations.

Background: Why the EU activated protection in 2022

The current protection status, which the EU had activated in March 2022 following the Russian attack on Ukraine, expires in March 2027. With the agreement reached by the ambassadors on Tuesday, the deadline is now extended by roughly another year until 4 March 2028. The Council of the EU member states stated: „Die grundsätzliche Einigung soll in den kommenden Wochen formal beschlossen werden." It is also expected that the decision will be formally adopted next week and then published in the Official Journal of the EU, where it will enter into force the following day.
