German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed granting Ukraine associated membership status in the European Union as an interim step toward full accession.
In a handwritten letter dated May 18 addressed to European Council President António Costa, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Merz outlined his proposal for Ukraine's special status.
The German leader argued that while Ukraine's full EU membership cannot be achieved quickly, an associated membership would provide important political support during the ongoing conflict with Russia.
