Brussels/London, 13 July 2026
The European Union and the United Kingdom imposed new sanctions on Russian individuals and organizations on Monday, citing ongoing cyberattacks, election interference, and disinformation as justification.
Background of the Sanctions
As the EU and the British government announced on Monday, the new punitive measures target a total of 33 individuals and entities. According to Brussels, the EU placed nine individuals and four companies on its sanctions list, while the United Kingdom designated 24 people and entities. Both sides are convinced that the background is a coordinated campaign by Russian state agencies against European infrastructure and democratic processes.
The EU's foreign affairs chief stated that a unit of the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB had been conducting cyber espionage against strategically important state institutions in France since 2010. In 2025, targets in the defense industry came into focus. According to this account, the FSB uses an entire "cyber ecosystem" for its activities, encompassing state and non-state actors.
