The European Union imposed sanctions on Monday against nine individuals and four organizations that it holds responsible for a years-long wave of cyberattacks and sabotage operations against EU member states.

At the center of the accusations is the so-called 16th Center of the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB. "According to the Council, this unit is said to control numerous well-known cyber groups such as Turla," the statement said. The EU accuses Moscow of using "a complex network of state and private actors for devastating cyber operations."

The statement was issued by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on behalf of the member states. "According to a statement by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and the member states, this system ranges from intelligence services to cybercriminals and hacktivists to companies."
