Dublin, July 28, 2026

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) called during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin for a cut of several hundred billion euros to the EU budget for the 2028 to 2034 period compared to the European Commission's proposal.

Demand for drastic savings

The European Commission had proposed a long-term EU budget of around 1.76 trillion euros, inflation-adjusted to 2025 prices. Merz described this draft as unbalanced and demanded savings across all areas. "Eine so weite und große Ausdehnung des europäischen Budgets ist für uns nicht tragbar. Die Zahlen sind nicht ausgewogen," he said at a joint press conference with the Irish head of government.
