Brussels, 31 July 2026

The EU Commission has accused the online trading platform Temu of obstructing an investigation into possibly unlawful state support.

What the proceedings are about

According to the Brussels authority, it wanted to investigate indications of possibly unlawful state support of the online giant at the beginning of December 2025, as it announced: „Die Brüsseler Behörde wollte Anfang Dezember 2025 Hinweisen auf möglicherweise unrechtmäßige staatliche Unterstützung des Online-Riesen nachgehen, wie sie mitteilte." The review is directed against the business activities of the parent company PDD and its subsidiary responsible for the EU market.

The online shopping portal is operated in the EU by the PDD Group via its subsidiary WhaleCo, according to the authority: „Das Online-Shoppingportal wird in der EU nach Angaben der Behörde vom Konzern PDD über seine Tochtergesellschaft WhaleCo betrieben." The Commission is thereby referring to the corporate structure behind the well-known online shopping portal Temu and notes that requests for information and inquiries have so far not been answered sufficiently.
