The EU Commission has for the first time comprehensively evaluated the European Nitrates Directive of 1991 and put the annual cost of nitrogen pollution from agriculture at 68 to 182 billion euros.
According to the European Commission's assessment, nitrogen pollution from agriculture in the EU causes annual costs of 68 to 182 billion euros. This emerges from the first comprehensive evaluation of the European Nitrates Directive of 1991. The costs include, among other things, expenditure on drinking water treatment. The EU Commission also sees potential for simplifications and a reduction in the administrative burden for farmers.
