Brussels, 29 June 2026
The Council of the EU countries on Monday approved a regulation in Brussels that continues to allow terms such as "Veggie-Burger" and "Tofu-Schnitzel", but will in future ban names such as "Seitan-Steak" or "Veggie-Hühnchen" for plant-based products.
Background to the debate
The decision comes amid a debate that has been ongoing for months over the labelling of meat and plant-based alternatives. The EU Commission had presented its proposal in December 2024, responding among other things to farmers' protests in Brussels and several EU states, which had been directed against rising production costs amid falling food prices. The member states have now given final approval to the compromise.
