Strasbourg, 17 June 2026

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday in Strasbourg on a compromise that is intended to significantly relax the EU rules on the use of New Genomic Techniques (NGT) such as the gene scissors Crispr-Cas.

What the new rules provide for

The vote began at 12:30 p.m. in Strasbourg. The members of Parliament decided on a compromise that representatives of Parliament had negotiated with the Council of the 27 EU countries. This news was broadcast on 17.06.2026 on the Deutschlandfunk program.

At its core, the issue concerns so-called New Genomic Techniques (NGT): these involve a limited number of genetic interventions – for example through the "gene scissors" Crispr-Cas – which, in the assessment of the EU Commission, merely accelerate conventional breeding. Supporters hope this will produce new varieties that, for instance, cope better with droughts and require less fertilizer.
