The European Commission is cutting its financial support for the Venice Art Biennale after the organizers had readmitted Russia as a participant for the first time since the war of aggression against Ukraine.
The decision followed a debate among EU foreign ministers over Russia's involvement in the long-established art exhibition. The European Union's foreign affairs representative, Kalla, stated that the foreign ministers had condemned this decision "aufs Schärfste" (in the strongest possible terms). The EU is thereby tightening its course toward Moscow also in the cultural sphere.
As early as May, the EU Commission had announced its intention to discontinue its funding of two million euros over three years. This step has now been definitively implemented in view of the planned Russian participation. The funds had previously been committed over a period of three years to support European cultural institutions.
