The European Commission has halted its funding for the Venice Biennale art exhibition, worth two million euros over three years, after the organizers announced Russia's return in March.

EU Foreign Affairs Representative Kaja Kallas justified the move on the margins of an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels. She explained that culture and support must not become instruments for whitewashing aggression. She said verbatim: „Kultur und Unterstützung dürfen nicht zu Instrumenten der Schönfärberei von Aggression werden." The European Commission would "die Finanzierung der Biennale von Venedig ein"stellen," according to Brussels.
