Lisbon, 09 June 2026

The EU Drugs Agency (EUDA) presented its annual report in Lisbon on Tuesday, warning of a growing number of drug-related deaths and a rapid increase in new psychoactive substances in Europe.

Opioids, mostly in combination with other substances, remain the most common cause of drug-related deaths in Europe. The EUDA estimates the number of overdoses in 2024 at at least 7,600, up from just under 7,500 in 2023. This continues the upward trend observed for years, while traditional drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin remain widespread.

Last year, 50 new psychoactive substances were registered in Europe for the first time. In total, the agency now monitors 1,050 such substances. A new psychoactive substance (NPS) is discovered every week, according to the report. These highly potent substances can be life-threatening even in small quantities.
