Streeck presents new statistics on drug-related deaths – record high for synthetic drugs

Last year, Streeck had already lamented a sharp rise in deaths linked to synthetic opioids.

In addition, significantly more people in Germany are estimated to die as a result of alcohol consumption. "Diese liegen in Deutschland um ein Vielfaches höher", said Streeck with reference to the figures. The statistics presented do not include deaths related to alcohol consumption.

Presentation at a Berlin addiction practice

The new data was presented at a practice in Berlin where severely dependent patients are treated with the opioid diamorphine. In addition to Streeck and a substitution doctor, clients of the practice were also scheduled to speak in order to describe the situation from the perspective of those affected.

According to Streeck, deaths among younger people in particular are on the rise. Against this backdrop, he called for faster and more consistent responses "auf neue, immer gefährlichere Drogen".

The Drug Commissioner's demands

„Es müsse mehr Prävention und ein Hilfesystem geben, das Menschen rechtzeitig erreiche", said the Federal Drug Commissioner. He stressed that withdrawal and therapy places for young people are particularly needed in order to reach at-risk young people at an early stage.
