Copenhagen, 16 June 2026
The European Environment Agency (EEA), based in Copenhagen, has classified 96 percent of European bathing waters as sufficient and 85 percent as "excellent" in its annual report published on Tuesday.
Data Basis and Methodology
The EEA analyzed data from more than 22,000 bathing sites in the 27 EU member states as well as in Albania and Switzerland. The assessment is based on examinations from the past four bathing seasons. The testing focuses on contamination with fecal bacteria, particularly intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli, which can cause stomach complaints, diarrhea, and infections in humans and primarily originate from wastewater as well as agriculture.
