EU freezes price cap on Russian oil until July 2026 – sanctions package still pending

An agreement on a new major package of EU sanctions in response to Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine is expected by Thursday next week.

On the issue of oil, however, the member states are already sending a signal. According to diplomats, it is primarily national interests that are making agreement on the new sanctions package difficult. Specifically, there is no unanimity, for instance, on the transit ban for Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Greece and national interests

For example, Greece wants to protect domestic shipping companies that earn money by transporting liquefied natural gas to third countries. The national economic interests of individual member states are thus blocking parts of the sanctions package, which according to the plans will include, among other things, a longer-term suspension of the adjustment of the so-called oil price cap.

In terms of content, the new EU sanctions package is directed against Russia because of the ongoing war in Ukraine. It is the 21st package of its kind since the beginning of Russian aggression. Interim solution with signal effect

The suspension of the automatic adjustment now decided upon is regarded as an interim solution. Until then, the price cap remains effectively frozen at its current level.

Observers in Brussels interpret the current step as a signal that the EU does not intend to soften its sanctions architecture even under tighter market conditions.
