Italy is effectively continuing to block the transfer of protection seekers from Germany and other member states, according to a new EU report. The EU Commission acknowledges Italy's considerable efforts but is calling for concrete steps to ensure that transfers actually take place.

In the first three weeks after the new EU asylum system came into force, Italy rejected the transfer of protection seekers from other member states twelve times, even though the country would have been responsible under the rules.

According to an EU report, Italy is effectively continuing to block the transfer of protection seekers from Germany and other member states. This emerges from an analysis by the EU Commission evaluating the first three weeks since the new asylum rules have been applied.
