Italy refuses to continue accepting asylum seekers returned by Germany, intensifying the diplomatic dispute between Rome and Berlin over the distribution of people rescued in the Mediterranean, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior led by Matteo Piantedosi.

The crisis between the two European governments was reignited after Italian authorities confirmed that they do not plan to resume the automatic acceptance of asylum seekers that Germany intends to return to the country of first entry. The Ministry of the Interior, led by Matteo Piantedosi, maintains that Italy cannot become the forced destination of people rejected in other member states, in line with the position held by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.
