Luxembourg, June 04, 2026

At the meeting of EU Interior Ministers in Luxembourg, several member states have raised the possibility of restricting automatic protection for Ukrainian men of draft age.

Background: Temporary Protection Directive

On Thursday in Luxembourg, EU Interior Ministers discussed the future of the Temporary Protection Directive, which has been in effect since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated at the outset that while they want to extend the directive, they have doubts "that Ukrainians of draft age should be included under it." The directive expires in spring 2027 and would need to be re-established thereafter.
