Angelina Köhler has won the silver medal in the 100 metres butterfly at the Swimming European Championships in Paris.

The Berlin native touched in with a strong time in the final on Friday evening and only had to concede defeat to the winner. Over the entire distance, Köhler delivered a controlled race and was still within striking distance of the top in the final metres. It marked the biggest international success of her career so far for the German swimmer.

The 21-year-old had already impressed in the semi-final, qualifying for the final with a strong preliminary time. In the final she relied on her trademark strength in the second half of the pool and fought her way back close to the medal positions. The German Swimming Federation spoke of an "outstanding performance" for the German team.
