European equity markets posted significant gains on Monday, with the EuroStoxx 50 closing just shy of its record high as investors digested signals from the United States and new discussions over Iran's nuclear programme.

Pharmaceutical Sector Under Pressure

The eurozone's leading index, the EuroStoxx 50, rose 0.4 percent on Monday to 5,348.80 points, missing the previous day's record high by less than two points. The broader Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.3 percent to 555.42. The major national indices in Paris, Frankfurt, and Milan were also predominantly positive, while London's FTSE 100 edged slightly lower.

Among sectors, commodities and banks led the gainers. On the losing side were consumer goods and healthcare stocks. Traders cited a friendly mood at the start of the week in Asian markets and robust eurozone economic data as supporting factors.
