Because two load-bearing columns warped in a 37-story high-rise on East 42nd Street in Manhattan, police and emergency services evacuated several streets and buildings during the morning (local time).
The high-rise on East 42nd Street is located not far from the Chrysler Building and the headquarters of the United Nations. According to the fire department, responders on site determined that two columns on the 21st floor had become deformed. The floors below the 21st floor were sagging, the fire department said.
Around 130 fire department and emergency medical services personnel were deployed. The New York City Department of Buildings posted on the online platform X that its structural engineers were on site and were investigating "possible structural issues at 235 East 42nd Street in Manhattan."
