A 38-story high-rise on East 42nd Street in Manhattan was evacuated on Tuesday morning due to acute risk of collapse after two load-bearing support columns warped in the upper floors.

The building at 235 East 42nd Street, once the global headquarters of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is currently being converted into a residential building. According to the New York Fire Department, two support columns on the 21st and 22nd floors had warped upon arrival of emergency personnel. The floors are sagging between the 21st and 26th stories, the fire department further explained.
Around 130 firefighters and rescue workers were dispatched in the morning hours, triggered by falling debris, as reported by the New York Times. Simultaneously with the rush-hour traffic in the district, emergency personnel called for large-scale evacuations. A nearby school also had to be cleared, as confirmed by police.
Authorities also deployed a drone to assess the extent of the damage from the air. The New York City Department of Buildings announced via the online service X that its structural engineers were on site to investigate possible structural problems. The skyscraper is located in the immediate vicinity of the Chrysler Building and the headquarters of the United Nations.
