Railway boss Evelyn Palla warned on Tuesday in Berlin of 'uncontrolled competition' in German long-distance rail transport, the consequences of which could negatively affect the majority.

Palla expressed her concerns on Tuesday in Berlin. She said: 'Otherwise, there is a risk of uncontrolled competition, the consequences of which may ultimately negatively affect the majority.' Competition should not be seen as an end in itself, the railway boss urged.

'Competition is not an end in itself, and we must be mindful,' said railway boss Palla. At the same time, she called for the benefits of an expanded offering to benefit all people in Germany.

The background to the warning is the announcement by the Italian company Italo that it intends to offer long-distance train services in Germany from 2028. The new entrant would be the first serious competition for Deutsche Bahn in long-distance transport in many years.
