The scheduled execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike in the U.S. state of Tennessee was halted on the evening after executioners injected the lethal chemicals, but the condemned was not pronounced dead.
Background of the case
The execution had been scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institute in Nashville. According to court documents released, among others, by the Guardian, observers of the execution reported to reporters at 8:26 p.m. that the syringes containing the lethal chemicals had been administered, but that the condemned was still alive and audibly respiring. Shortly thereafter, Judge Kyle Hixson informed the attorneys of all parties in a telephone conference that the responsible authorities had notified the court "that Ms. Pike had not been pronounced dead."
