In the USA, two men were executed on Thursday – one in Tennessee by lethal injection and one in Oklahoma by nitrogen hypoxia.

Executions in Tennessee and Oklahoma

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, an independent organization that documents executions in the United States, both executions took place on Thursday. Tennessee used lethal injection; Oklahoma once again relied on the controversial nitrogen hypoxia, in which nitrogen gas is administered to the condemned person in order to reduce the oxygen level in the blood.

In Tennessee, Anthony Hines was executed. He had been convicted of murder. The execution took place at the state penitentiary in Nashville, the capital of the state. According to reporting, US President Donald Trump did not intervene in the immediate proceedings, though his name surfaces in the context of the ongoing debate over the death penalty in the USA.
