Vienna's Anton Proksch Institute is reporting a sharp rise in inquiries about gambling addiction, particularly regarding sports betting, during the ongoing football World Cup.

Oliver Scheibenbogen, head of the Academy, Research and Digitalization division at Vienna's Anton Proksch Institute, reports a significant increase in people seeking help. "We are seeing a massive increase in inquiries in our outpatient clinic in the gambling area, especially regarding sports betting," Scheibenbogen told APA – Austria Presse Agentur. The clustering coincides temporally with the World Cup, during which betting is omnipresent.

Those particularly affected are people who already bet anyway: "Those people who already bet would do so even more intensively," Scheibenbogen said. Relapses among former patients can also be observed during such major events. "In some cases, people who had already been abstinent would have relapses due to such events." This development means that significantly more people are coming to the outpatient clinic.
