On the occasion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, the industry expects a record volume of sports betting, while addiction experts warn of a growing illusion of control and aggressive advertising.

This year's men's FIFA World Cup will be held for the first time in three North American countries. For the first time, 48 teams are taking part in the men's FIFA World Cup, increasing the number of matches to 104. This expansion of the tournament has a direct impact on the betting market, as every additional match also increases the number of potential betting opportunities.

In the United States, access to legal sports betting has expanded significantly since the 2022 World Cup. While at the 2022 World Cup only around 40 percent of the US population had access to legal betting offerings, according to an analysis by the investment bank Macquarie, that figure is around 65 percent for the upcoming World Cup. The company forecasts a betting volume of more than 50 billion US dollars for the tournament, corresponding to nearly half a billion dollars per match.
